In September this year (2016)2016, voting startstakes place to elect members to the 20 District Health Boards across New Zealand.
The Boards are responsible for overseeing the delivery of health and disability services in their district.
Four members, including the Chair, are appointed by the Health Minister, the remaining seven members are elected by those registered to vote in the Waikato district.
Standing for election
Anyone who is a New Zealand citizen and is on the parliamentary electoral roll can stand for election as a DHB member. You don’t have to live in the DHB’s district to stand for election to the board, but you can’t stand for election in more than one DHB. DHB employees who meet the eligibility criteria are also able to stand for election.

Voting
The DHB election uses the STV (Single Transferable Vote) system where voters rank their preferred candidates in order of preference (1 for the candidate you most prefer, 2 for your next preferred candidate and so on). You can rank as many or as few of the candidates on the voting paper as you wish. For your vote to count, there should be only one candidate with the figure 1 beside their name.

Voting for the seven elected members of each of the DHB will take place in 2016.

Up to four other members may be appointed by the Minister of Health to fill any gaps in the expertise needed for the DHB to best achieve its functions and objectives.
