Description
Te Puna Oranga ( Māori Health service) comprises of two units that provide the core functions which form the basis for Waikato DHB Māori health.

  • Māori Health Corporate Team - Develops and delivers strategies and initiatives to address inequalities and health disparities for Māori residing in the Waikato DHB region.
  • Māori Health Frontline Service - Delivers cultural support and advocacy for Māori patients and their whanau across targeted service areas.

Kaitiaki

Kaitiaki Frontline Service offers cultural support for Māori and their whanau, who are accessing health and disability services in Waiora Waikato, Tokoroa, Te Kuiti, Thames and Taumaranui hospitals.

What is the role of Kaitiaki?

  • To offer assistance, regarding Maori beliefs, values and cultural practices
  • To offer support for Maori patients during their admission in hospital
  • To help the patient and whanau understand the type of care provided by health clinicians
  • To link patients to other hospital services that can help them while they are in hospital
  • To link patient and whanau to external support services.

What is the role of Kaitakawaenga?

  • To provide cultural support/intervention to Tangata Whaiora and their whānau on admission to the Henry Rongomau Bennett Centre and within Mental Health and Addiction Services for Waikato DHB.
  • To assist facilitating the journey of care of Tangata Whaiora and their whānau through inpatient at Henry Rongomau Bennett Centre as part of the Multidisciplinary Teams.
  • To identify and address areas to enhance service delivery to Māori.
