Waikato Health Trust

The Waikato Health Trust was established in 1993 as the Health Waikato Charitable Trust. Its broad purpose is to support the provision of health and disability services within the area served by the Waikato District Health Board.

Within that broad purpose the Trust undertakes a number of specific activities. The main one of these is to manage the donations and bequests received by the Waikato District Health Board.

The Trust changed its name from the Health Waikato Charitable Trust to the Waikato Health Trust in 2002.

This name change was made to reflect the fact that the Trust saw its role as being to support all health and disability services and not just those provided by Health Waikato (Health Waikato being the provider arm of the Waikato District Health Board).

More information

Under an arrangement between the Board and the Trust all donations and bequests received by the Board are passed to the Trust. They are then spent strictly in accordance with the donor's wishes.

This arrangement gives donors confidence that any conditions they may wish to attach to their donation will be respected and that donations will not be swallowed up within the general revenue of the Board. It also enables donations to benefit from the tax advantages of a charitable trust as well as maximising returns by allowing funds to be pooled.

From time to time the Trust may also be requested by the Board to assist in undertaking a fund-raising campaign for the Board. The most recent example of this is the highly successful campaign to raise funds for the Peter Rothwell Academic Centre.

The participation of the Trust again provided confidence that donations would be appropriately managed and the returns from them maximised.
